Mental Health - How Christmas can lift our spirits

13 Oct , 2021
Tis the season to be jolly! Today I am looking at the positive impact Christmas can have on our mental health, and how we can raise our spirits during this festive season.

Keeping traditions alive
The Christmas holidays often bring up fond memories, particularly as it is a time of year when family and friends get together, reminisce, and recreate traditions from past Christmases. Studies have shown that when engaging in nostalgic reflection, people are more likely to feel a sense of belonging and stability. Events like putting up the Christmas tree in the same spot or watching a Christmas film can bring us back to a time in our past where we have felt safe and happy. By continuing old traditions or creating new ones, Christmas can be a time of positive memories and experiences.

Making crafts and decorations
Did you know that arts and crafts can help to reduce the symptoms of depression and anxiety and positively boost your mental wellbeing? It’s time to get creative! Whether you’re looking to spruce up your home, office, or even create something dazzling to go on your Pines and Needles tree, making Christmas decorations is a great way to lift your spirits. Helping others
Whilst we mostly associate Christmas as a time of joy, it’s important to remember that some people find the season particularly difficult. The festivities can heighten feelings of stress, loneliness, grief and more. As it’s the season of goodwill, why not spend some time helping those in need this Christmas. Not only can you spread joy to others, but research shows that acts of kindness stimulate the production of serotonin, which is linked to feelings of happiness!

There are lots of ways to provide a helping hand this season, from volunteering at local food banks, donating to charities such as the Salvation Army and Age UK, or even spending time helping your elderly neighbours. It feels good doing good!

Real Christmas trees
There is no denying the happiness that comes from buying a Christmas Tree and transforming your home into a cosy Christmas delight. But can certain trees lift your spirits more than others? In a recent study by the University of Surrey, Dr Bigitta Gatersleben explains the positive health benefits of real Christmas trees:

“There is a lot of evidence to suggest that people recover more quickly from stress and mental fatigue when exposed to natural, as opposed to built-up and ‘fake’ environments. Indeed, plants in offices have been shown to have a positive effect on the wellbeing and creativity of workers.”

There is no better way to boost your mood than by bringing a bit of nature indoors, especially at Christmas time. If you’re looking to spruce up your home then look no further than the king of the trees, the Nordmann Fir. We grow these trees on our sustainable farms in Scotland. Take a trip to one of our pop-up stores to purchase yours or order one online. While you are there you can order lots of other greenery too, plus chooses from a huge range of lights decorations and accessories.

Don’t forget if choosing is proving a bit stressful you can ask our advice because after all we are the experts. We’ll help you choose, deliver to your home, and even install and decorate the tree for you too. Just be sure to get what you want and let Christmas be as happy and stress-free as possible. Make it one to remember!
