Our 7 Step Guide to Keep Your Pets(and Tree!) Safe This Christmas

As a nation of animal lovers, many of our homes will be filled with festive cheer (and wagging tails) this Christmas. But with pets around, keeping your Christmas tree secure and your decorations safe can be easier said than done.

Veronika Kusak, our Ecom Director (and dog and cat mum herself), shares her top tips for keeping both your tree, and your pets, safe this festive season.

STEP ONE: Securely anchor your tree

Curious pets love exploring anything new, and your Christmas tree is no exception! A poorly anchored tree could tip over, injuring your pet, breaking ornaments, or spilling tree water. A sturdy stand (and water for extra stability) will keep your tree firmly in place throughout the festive season.

STEP TWO: Leave your tree bare for a few days

The irresistible smell of a real Christmas tree can trigger an inquisitive streak in pets. Before decorating, allow your furry friend a few days to get used to the tree. This reduces the risk of accidents while they explore safely.

STEP THREE: Hide electrical lights and wires

Twinkling lights are a staple of Christmas, but wires can be tempting to chew. Keep cords out of reach or use protective covers to prevent accidents and protect your pets from harm.

STEP FOUR: Avoid tinsel

Shiny tinsel may bring nostalgia, but for pets, it can be dangerous. Dogs or cats may ingest it, leading to intestinal blockages and potentially a trip to the vet. For households with furry friends, it’s safer to skip tinsel altogether.

STEP FIVE: Keep tree water covered and out of reach

If your tree stand contains water, make sure it’s covered. Stagnant water can harbor bacteria, and fertilisers sometimes added to the water may be toxic. A tree skirt or basket can help keep curious paws away.

STEP SIX: Place fragile ornaments higher up

Pets love to bat at dangling objects. Protect your delicate decorations by placing them on sturdy branches higher up the tree, out of reach from playful paws.

STEP SEVEN: Save the presents for Christmas morning

Wrapped gifts under the tree may attract your pets’ attention, especially if they contain chocolate, raisins, nuts, or other foods toxic to dogs. Keep presents hidden until Christmas morning to protect both your tree and your pets.

With a few simple precautions, you can enjoy a beautiful, festive tree without compromising your pet’s safety or your decorations!
